I'd like to express my thanks to all of our local supporters for a great year. Stay tuned for some great things coming in 2019!
Scherer Resources Wishes you all a very joyous holiday season full of happiness and health.
Two weeks ago I made my annual trip to Bradford Woods in southern Indiana for Camp Possability. Each year every camper is assigned to a volunteer to help with their needs and ensure the camp experience is the best it can be. This year my volunteer was named Kayla Silverman and she is a physical therapy student at the University of Indianapolis. I told Kayla when we arrived that team work would be important to our experience throughout the week and it really was. On Monday i had a variety of people pull me up to a height of over 50ft in the air. Its very similar to business when everyone must work together to accomplish goals and tackle big problems. On Tuesday I tried something new, Ballroom Dancing. An activity in which connection with your partner is of paramount importance. We try to establish a connection with each of our students at Scherer Resources just as you must during a ballroom dance. On Wed we had our last day of ballroom dance and on this day we had to take on a different partner and in business you are forced to work with many different individuals. But i enjoyed working with each partner even though they were a little different. Our guest speaker was Kevan from We Carry Kevan.com and he spoke to us about his experiences going through Europe. In the same way that kevan relies on hid friends you need to rely on your partners and coworkers in business to reach your goals. Team work is still crucial and putting your ultimate business goal above your own personal goals is a must. I enjoy campy possabilty because i get to partner with my volunteer to create our experience together and in business when two people combine their efforts you end up with a better outcome. I would encourage all of you once you've read this to think of a goal you want to achieve and who around you could help you to make that a reality. With team work persistence and unity anything is possible. At Scherer Resources we try to pass along these same values to our students so they can be the best they can be in whatever work environment they find themselves in. If you went to camp with me please feel free to comment on this blog so we can continue the conversation.
In December around Christmas my brother gave me the honor of making me his best man by giving me a best man t-shirt. I had something to truly look forward to but also had some big responsibilities with my new title. Fast forward to May and I embark on a 10 hour drive to Delaware packing with me a decent supply of nervousness, On Saturday we had the rehearsal diner and that meal was very good. and on Sunday the big day arrived and at Noon we got ready while watching the Indy 500. At 3pm we headed out for the venue. Since it was an outdoor wedding we all hoped for no rain but God had other plans. I had told people that its ok if it rains because we'll all have better stories to tell. So at 6:30 in a light drizzle the wedding started and it was an awesome event. What it all reminded me of was that in business as in marriage you need to be committed to a goal and have reliable partners to go on the journey with you. My brother met his now wife on a softball field and i hope they hit many homeruns throughout their life together.
Just a week after my brothers wedding I had an old friend from high school wedding to attend. Her ceremony was here in fort wayne so thankfully i didn't have to travel even though she did as she lives in California now. Like my brothers it was a lovely event and i was happy to take part. Both couples beginning new lives together and pledging their commitment to each other inspired me and filled me with love for life and a drive to make a difference in my own community. This venture Scherer Resources is more than just a local business its a passion to improve and change our community for the better realized and i'm going to dedicate myself to that mission. In business and in life there are bound to be various circumstances that arise and having partners to lean on can make all the difference. When the storms hit having someone to help you through can give your strength you might not have know was there. That is what we are trying to provide to our students as well having someone to help guide them and inspire the inner strength within them. A word of advice for everyone: when the curve balls of life come your way reach out to someone you trust and perhaps you can turn that curve ball into a home run!
Scherer Resources was very happy to have 50% of our eligible students placed in community jobs at the end of this school year. One of our students is working at a local community music store. We have a student working for a local remodeling company, and a student working in the restaurant industry. This is a good example of people with special needs exceeding expectations and finding success in multiple different areas. If employers are willing to open themselves up to this under utilized resource then many of the industries in our area could benefit from these dedicated students.
One of the biggest barriers for these students is transportation to and from work. Recently we had some friends of scherer resources donate a bike to a student to help him get to work. Now not only can he be employed but he has his own transportation. Scherer Resources works tirelessly to overcome barriers and provide paths to success for our students and we couldn't be more proud of our community and our students for coming together and setting an example of what is possible.
In the future we look forward to having many more of these success stories as we partner further with local companies to help fill their work needs with reliable, passionate, and dedicated employees.
Thank You All for Your Continued Support!
Keep Soaring to New Heights
Thank you to all who attended the Disability Expo on Sat May 12th 2018. Scherer Resources was proud to feature our communication decks and our Interviewing system at this years expo. We sold some communication decks and met many wonderful people. A big Thank You also goes out to all those who filled out the survey that the Fort Wayne Allen county disability council handed out. Your feedback will help them to set priorities and know what issues are most important to our local community. One of the major priorities this year for the expo is employment. There were employers from Kroger and Lowes that job seekers could talk with regarding finding a job. This years Expo seemed a little larger than the year before. Scherer Resources is always excited to talk about the programs we offer and the products we create. Thanks Everyone for the Support. We'll see you all next year.

Each year March is Disability Awareness Month. This year the Governors Council has decided upon the theme "Be Cool. We are" So I to go over some ways that you could be more welcoming and inclusive to people with disabilities.
The first area I would recommend focusing on is employment. I've got two sayings that employers should keep in mind when considering people with disabilities. The first phrase is "Inclusion drives Innovation" which means having a wider array of people means having a larger variety of ideas and a better chance for success. And the second is "Ask the Person" which means ask the individual with a disability what their primary skills are and how they would be a good fit for your company.
Some other considerations during this month are that not all disabilities are visible. Someones outward appearance might mask a cognitive or internal disability. Respecting personal space is a big concern as well. Individuals with disabilities are often abused because they conform to authority figures so when working with someone and not knowing their background its good to give some comfort space to protect and ensure the dignity of all parties involved. I hope these tips can help to make your workplace a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.
People with disabilities want the same things as any other employee. They want respect, dignity and a chance to contribute to the company or organization they are working for. Thank you!

Each year the state and federal government try to change and adjust their priorities based on the needs of the people and the needs of the state or country at that time. In the State of the State address our Governor remarked that having a 21st century high skilled workforce was one of him main priorities. The state wants employees that are job ready when they exit high school. The department of education is creating new graduation pathways for students and adjusting the requirements of a diploma to include a particular number of credits hours in Vocational Training. This is welcome news for a program likes ours. It is good to see the state try and better prepare each student for the labor force. One bill that is worth paying attention to is SB177 by Senator Cruz which would create one uniform diploma for everyone which would be easier to track for the federal government. I will keep you up to date on the progress of this bill and any other changes coming to the education department this year. There is a federal law that was just past know as the RAISE Family Caregivers act. This law calls for HHS to develop a national plan to "recognize and support family caregivers" within 18 months. The plan is also supposed to provide recommendations for state and local governments as well, and is to be updated every other year. Please reach out to your Representatives to give your input on this act, so that the people who are most effected can have a voice in how this is developed. The happenings at the state and federal level are very crucial right now so I will strive to keep you all updated on any changes that impact the disabled community. Thank you all, be aware, be involved.
2017 was a very successful year for Scherer Resources, and 2018 looks to be a great year of growth and progress for us. On Jan. 8th we will start having students from East Allen County School District come to our new office space that is being remodeled on Hartzell St. in New Haven. We hope that this new venture is a win for the entire New Haven community. Local employers will have more opportunity to hire dedicated employees to fill their openings, and local businesses will be able to use Scherer Resources as a consultation source on working with the disabled community. We are also excited to be able to utilize our office space for Virtual Interviews as part of the Dan Marino Foundation partnership we are continuing. This give us an opportunity to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each student so we can tailor our focus based on the results of the interviews. This also gives the students valuable practice in the interview setting so they are more prepared to enter the workforce. 2017 saw the start of our relationship with a local job placement organization and over the next year we hope to grow that into a long lasting partnership to mutually benefit both organizations. We will continue to work with state and federal officials to educate them and push for policy that supports independence and choice among the disable community. In Feb. we will be hosting an educational luncheon for the New Haven business community to spread the word of what we do and how Scherer Resources and our wonderful students can be an asset to their businesses. If you have a project that our students could learn from we are always seeking new experiences for them. Please contact Scherer Resources Inc. Thank you all for your continued support and together we will soar to new heights in 2018!
