My goal is to work at Krogers bagging groceries, stocking shelves, and being a cashier. The major things I learned at Scherer Resources that prepared me for my goal is
It is no surprise that Shirley wants to work at Kroger. Her love for her family is evident in every conversation, and she wants to follow her role models, her mother and her sister, in working at Kroger. She is a little modest, though. She works very hard and excels at those items on her list: she is never late and ensures her fellow students return from break on time; she is the first to finish any cash handling exercise and then proceeds to assist others; and she always has a smile on her face.
Shirley's goals are very much within her grasp. We are very excited to see her continue to excel and grow after graduating from our program.
Allen is a senior at South Side High School. He is a second year graphics design student, and his work ethic shows through in all he does. Whether he is playing varsity soccer for South Side, bussing tables at the Hoppy Gnome, or creating our next product design, Allen gives nothing less than 100% effort.
We asked Allen about working at Scherer Resources:
"Hi, my name is Allen Marquez. Being a part of Scherer Resources has really enhanced my graphic design skills. Not only that, but my traditional art skills as well as teaching me real life skills and that managing your time is important. Learning more about the marketing industry here at Scherer Resources truly inspired me to continue my career and become the best I can be. To see your art work be made to actual products is always a good feeling. Especially when the products are being used for a good cause. I plan on pursuing my career after high school at IUPUI and continue the path on achieving my life long goals. "
We often tell our students to be a butterfly: to gain strength and confidence in the struggle to grow. Allen incorporated a large butterfly into the ribbon that represents our program and our efforts towards inclusion awareness. The little butterflys represent our students as they go out in the world, employed and integrated into the community.
We thank Allen for all of his help and efforts so far this year and look forward to what he comes up with in the future. Stay tuned to our website, Facebook, and other social media platforms to see more of Allen's, and our other interns' work. We know you won't be disappointed.
I like everything about Scherer Resources. We learn to tell time, count money, add and subtract, read the newspaper, and job skills. Most of all, I like Payday! I like all the people at Scherer Resources. They are nice to me. They are fun to be around. I have learned some interesting things from the staff that I can use in the future on my job.
Butterflies have to struggle against the cocoon in order to break free and fly away. This is why we encourage our students to "be a butterfly." We want them to learn and grow so they can go out on their own and succeed in the world. Lisa is the most frequent recipient of our Butterfly Award. She isn't afraid of the struggle and it shows in how much she has grown.
"After I finish my Scherer Resources Training program at the Anthis Career Academy, I would like to work in a hospital environment helping children feel better. I can read to them, talk with them, and keep them company when their parents are not there. Maybe I can learn how to dispense medication."
After getting to know Lucia this year, we believe there isn't much she can't do when she puts her mind to it. Her kind heart and concern for her classmates is a constant demonstration of her caring personality. We can't wait to see how far she'll go.
Be sure to check back next week where we'll put our spotlight on another one of our students: Lisa Fairchild.
